Product description

Don’t F*ck Up Your Baby draws an ingenious connection between building a brand and raising a newborn baby, each one of the 18-steps relating to a year of the newborn’s life. This book simplifies the process of branding, distilling what the authors have learnt from their years of industry experience and having contributed to the launch of over 75 startups into a seriously fun, and useful, reading experience.

If you’re looking to create your brand identity, then come on this journey of raising your newborn brand with this book. You’ll learn about the theory behind creativity and branding, while also getting interactive examples that help you bring your brand to life. With as much humour as experience, this book is a must-have for anyone looking to design their startup brand.

Authors

Joris van Dooren

After the childhood dream of becoming a Tour de France champion didn’t quite work out, Joris van Dooren made a switch to academics, finishing up a master’s degree in international business communication. From there, he launched into a successful career in advertising, marking himself as a true innovator in the industry. You won’t catch him doing the same thing twice!

In 2009, he took a position lecturing creativity, advertising, and branding at the Fontys University of Applied Sciences. He thrives when helping people unlock their creativity, foster their curiosity, and develop critical thinking skills. If he’s not brainstorming or building brands, you’ll most likely find him secretly working towards that yellow jersey.

Coen Luijten

While he worked for years in the banking and insurance industry, Coen Luijten discovered that his heart belonged to creativity, advertising and brand building. In his mid-thirties in 2010, armed with his passion for innovation, he made the switch to higher education, taking a position teaching creativity, advertising, and branding at the Fontys University of Applied Science. In 2017, he obtained his Master of Business Innovation in Imagineering, which he now uses to help people unlock their creativity and foster their newborn brands’ image.

If he’s not building brands, you’ll find him learning about motivational psychology, travelling from country to country, and immersing himself in distinct cultures from around the globe.

Don't F*ck Up Your Baby is an excellent self-help book on how to strategically market your start-up at the brand level. Here, the analogy of a start-up as the baby, which is central to the book, is a playful and appealing comparison that clearly makes sense. Nonetheless, it speaks a little out of line with, for me at least, the main idea in the book: those who pay serious attention to their brand as a complement to their service or product have an edge in a competitive market. Whether you are a fresh start-up or have been around for a while, the principle remains the same. However, both will be able to grab the advantage using this book.

The 18-part roadmap, written by two experts in brand strategy, makes for a concise and manageable exercise that can be used by students as well as business owners or start-ups to make a measurable impact on business through brand strategy. Besides a plan for execution, it also makes very clear how important a strong brand strategy is in modern day economics. The roadmap is delivered in the accessible, light-hearted and humorous style of Coen Luijten and Joris van Dooren that is recognisable from their previous book, Creativity Works! Which makes it not only a very useful exercise, but also highly enjoyable and potentially binding when done with employees or colleagues.

Each step in the book is underpinned by the necessary, sometimes a bit oversimplified or concise, literature along with strong real-life examples. This gives it more the vibe of a self-help book for start-ups than a handy tool for experienced brand marketers. But, this is also where the book really seems to be aimed. If you want to make an impact with your start-up or want to bring a strategic breath of fresh air to your business, Don't F*ck Up Your Baby is an excellent tool to take big steps towards this.

Even though it's a book you can follow along to bring you idea to life, it's also just a good read. Coen and Joris really know what they're talking about. Combining their knowledge that they have gathered throughout the years, they wrote yet another helpful book. You can choose to follow along a bachelor of 4 years in marketing/communication or you can just read this book!

Every book of Coen and Joris brings a smile when reading. This guide to build a new brand too. The step-by-step method works for everybody and the examples are clear and helps a lot. I hope a lot of great babies will be born with help of this book!

Not completely finished yet, but as a Brand Owner no-brainer book to (re)think of your brand values and identity. Really happy with it.
